Hub Garage: A Photo

Sometimes, research begins with one photo. This 1922 black & white photograph of the Hub Garage Machine Shop on Mill Street in Rhinebeck, NY captivated our researcher with ten men, a “Socony Gasoline” advertising sign, and one Socony gas pump. (Rhinebeck History; DLR.055). What’s the history?

In the winter of 1915-1916, signs for the Hub Garage were captured in the center of this photo of snowbound Rhinebeck. (Rhinebeck History; 2018-037.002)

In 1918, the Official Automobile Blue Book mentioned a machine shop with 1st class mechanics.

In 1913, Turton & Snyder sold automobile and bicycle supplies at the Hub Garage. (The Messenger)

By 1920, “automobile accessories of all kinds” were offered. (Red Hook Times)

The men pictured left to right in the 1922 photo were: John Donaldson, Mert Sullivan, Harry Rynders (1892-1969 buried Rhinebeck Cemetery), Winfield Bathrick (1897-1979, buried Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery), Dick Turton, Ralph Wheeler, Pete Snyder (1880-1961, buried Rhinebeck Cemetery), Clarence Rhynders, (1896-1961, buried Rhinebeck Cemetery), unidentified, and Gustave Ebers (1905-1998 buried in Rhinebeck Cemetery). This parade float advertised the Hub Garage. (Rhinebeck History; DLR.083; undated)
In 1933, Clarence Rhynders (pictured above) was selling coal in Rhinebeck. (Rhinebeck History; 2018-032.38)

See you in June!
