Thursday, July 30, 6:30pm
What stories are written on American faces, and what do Americans think about themselves? After January 6th, documentary portrait photographer Robert Kalman began approaching everyday Americans across the country asking each of them the same question: “What’s it like for you to be an American?” while offering to make their portrait using a large format, eight-by-ten inch view camera.
Join us for a discussion of the book and its backstory, Robert’s process of making these portraits, and a hands-on experience that invites the audience to reflect on the same question Robert asked everyone he photographed. Books will be available for sale and signing.
An exhibition of photographs from this collection will be on view at Montgomery Row, July 1-August 28. Select photographs are also part of CPW Kingston’s Upstate Photography Biennial, up through September 6.
