Hoopla – Not just for e-books and audiobooks! Hoopla allows you to stream digital content–including the latest Taylor Swift and Chappel Roan albums, recent bestsellers like Demon Copperhead or Tom Lake, and classics like Nickel & Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich–ON DEMAND, on any device, including your Smart TV or laptop. All Starr Library patrons get up to 5 borrows per month. You can find instructions for downloading Hoopla here on their FAQs page.

Libby Sign in with your library barcode and PIN number to access all of the Mid-Hudson Library System’s digital offerings, including e-books, audiobooks, magazines, with specially curated sections for Kids and Teens and recommendations from librarians. The Great CoursesHoopla provides access to The Great Courses Library Collection videos with a 7-day unlimited Binge pass. You can also borrow individual titles to stream or download, everything from the Wines of France to Mastering Tai Chi, the Foundations of Cognitive Behavioral Theory, and the Medieval World. 

Language Learning

Transparent Languages
– Provides rich, interactive learning materials in over 120 languages, with additional resources such as video-based American Sign Language (ASL) software, an American Citizenship Test prep course, K-12 courses and lessons (as well as lessons for adults), and ESL-specific materials for speakers of 34 different languages, including English for speakers of Spanish, Pashto, and Ukrainian.

Creativebug
– Have you ever wanted to up your DIY game? With Creativebug, you can stream thousands of fine arts and hand-crafting classes taught by knowledgeable instructors. Creativebug has everything from garment sewing and ceramics to paper craft ideas and inspiration to help get your daily art practice started. Want to learn how to make shibori inspired snowflakes, woven paper stars, a teacup candle, or marbled paper–all for FREE? Here’s your chance.

General Research

NovelNY Provided by the New York State Library, NOVELny is an online virtual library connecting New Yorkers to 21st century information via libraries and library systems statewide. NOVELny is an electronic resource access project that enables libraries across New York State to give their communities online access to the full text of thousands of journals, newspapers and other references. 

InfoTrac Newsstand This innovative full-text newspaper resource allows users to search articles instantly by title, headline, date, author, newspaper section, or other fields, with some publications available up to the current issue. This resource provides access to 2,300 major U.S. regional, national, and local newspapers, as well as leading titles from around the world, including The Nation, Harper’s, and New York Magazine. It also includes thousands of images, radio and TV broadcasts, and transcripts.

Job & Career Search / Education

JobNowPowered by Brainfuse, JobNow includes resources to help with your resume, job search process, interview skills, and even filing for unemployment benefits. There are also resources for adult learners to help prepare for the New York State High School Equivalency (HSE) exam and the US Citizenship test. 

DigitalLearn.Org – This resource offers learning modules that allow you to tackle technology at your own pace! Learn to use email, buy a plane ticket, and other practical exercises. Totally free! Great for seniors or people who are new to computer technology. 

Coursera – Free for all NY state residents by written request. Through Coursera, unemployed (or underemployed) New Yorkers have access to nearly 4,000 programs across high-growth industries and can hone skills in data science, business, and technology. Many of these programs are pathways to certifications or professional certificates and can help elevate your career.
